Stroudsburg, Pa – The Monroe County Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan Steering Committee will host a public information and strategy planning session at 6:00 pm on Wednesday January 13, at the Monroe County Public Safety Center, 100 Gypsum Road, in Stroudsburg. Through a grant funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the County has contracted MCM Consulting Group, INC. to identify potential natural, human-made and technological hazards and produce an Update to the current Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan (MHMP).

A planning group, comprised of the County, municipalities, other agencies and utilities, has selected a list of potential hazards that could occur within the County and is the process of developing a list of mitigation measures intended to eliminate or reduce the negative impact of those hazards. The list of hazards includes flooding, utility outage, wildfire, winter storms, and terrorism. Examples of mitigation projects include construction of storm shelters, purchases of properties that lie in flood-prone areas and further coordination of emergency response teams.

Since funds for mitigation projects are only available to jurisdictions that have a FEMA approved MHMP, completion of the Update by FEMA’s February, 2017 deadline is critical for those communities currently planning or implementing mitigation projects.

The public is invited to attend this January 13th meeting to learn about the MHMP Update and to provide the planning group with input regarding the planning process.

For more information about the MHMP, please refer to the Monroe County Hazard Mitigation Plan Update website at http://www.monroecountypa.gov/haz-mit or contact Maryellen Keegan at the Monroe County Office of Emergency Management, (570) 992-4113.

Individuals and groups who are interested in blending art and conservation while painting a rain barrel are encouraged to submit a design for the “Retain the Rain” Rain Barrel Art Challenge. A rain barrel is a container, placed at a downspout, which captures and stores roof runoff for outdoor uses. Those wishing to enter the Art Challenge must submit a design to the Pocono Arts Council by Friday, November 7, 2014. Twenty winners will receive a rain barrel to paint based on their submitted design, and the barrels will be on public display in the Boroughs of Delaware Water Gap and Mount Pocono from April through October 2015.
